Christmas in Los Banos: Part 3

The next day, Uncle Dan, Auntie Cynthia, Lane, Gabriela, and my mom headed to this wildlife refuge in Los Banos. My mom has really been looking forward to taking some of her grandkids there.

I wanted to come along, but my sis Theresa was having trouble with her car in Hollister and wanted to come for some sister sleep over fun. Instead, I drove out to pick her up and bring her into town so we could spend more time together. Because everyone needs more sister time.

There was so much more fun that I didn't document including endless hours of cousin fun and playtime, an entire scrumptious Fakesgiving dinner that we enjoyed, sister time, getting extra visit time with Auntie Cynthia and Uncle Dan.  We really had a wonderful long and relaxing holiday this year.

Christmas in Los Banos: Part 2

Wow. I can't believe how long it's taking me to get this post done.

Anyway, here is the Christmas mantle with the stockings hung by the chimney with care.  See those four sweet handmade stockings with the red and green polka dot cuffs??? Those were made by yours truly. I am so pleased with how they turned out.
And here is the tree shortly after Santa left, or at least before the kids got to it!
Easton really had fun opening his stocking.  He quickly got the hang of it, and started digging down to see what was inside. When he couldn't find anything anymore, he started signing for "help", like there's something wrong, I can't get anything else out of this (totally darling) stocking!!
Gabriela was very excited about everything she pulled out of her stocking, starting with a ginormous cherry candy cane. What the heck was Santa thinking when he got her that???
TOOTHPASTE!!!!
Have you ever seen someone more delighted to have Strawberry flavored toothpaste in their stocking??
AND rainbow Hello Kittie socks??? This girl scored.
Big time.
Easton was excited about everything in his stocking, even the diaper area spray.
Andrew makes the best gift opening faces.
Gabriela is also opening her mixer that she asked Santa for. It's the cutest little wooden
 kitchen aid-like mixer
Easton, our little elf, loved his little wooden rainbow popper toy from Santa. Here he is, giving it the inaugural whirl around the living room floor.

Papa gave Gabriela and her cousins a really special handmade gift this year.  One that should last forever. I really hope Gabriela is able to bring out this gift and watch her grandchildren enjoy it
That's a big box, Papa!
It's a baby doll cradle!  So beautiful! And it has a little hand crocheted "mattress" made by Nana. Gabriela was jealous that hers was white but Mina's was purple. So her sweet Nana crocheted her a beautiful pink blanket to put on top of her dollies when they are in the cradle.
Easton loved his water bottle.  He couldn't stop drinking from it the rest of the morning!
Here is my mom just starting to cry over the gift I gave her.  When we told my parents we were pregnant with Gabriela, we gave them a photo album engraved to say "Baby Grover". My mom gave it back to me a few months before Christmas and asked that I fill it up with photos. It wasn't easy, but I picked 62 photos over more than 4 years for her album. I made sure to pick special photos of them together, of Gabriela and Easton with things my mom has made for them - blankets, hats, dresses, baby Gabriela in her "I love my Nana" bib.  My mom was all out sobbing by the time she got to the end, and she told me she would cherish it always.  Now that's a special gift. (if I do say so, myself)
There was a ton more gift opening, but we were too busy oohing and aahing over the gifts and helping kiddos open theirs to take many more photos.

But here's one of Gabriela and me enjoying her super fancy Alice in Wonderland pop up book.
Then there was a candy cane photo shoot with my little goof ball.
Easton and Daddy in their Christmas best.
Auntie Cynthia loved getting to put Easton down for a nap. She gave him little snuggle bugs and he went right to sleep for her. I think her heart may have just melted.

Nana made sure we ate wonderfully well, keeping a batch of tamales always ready for us to eat. Talk about spoiled! My parents were also excited to bust out with the fancy wine they bought earlier this year on the wine train in Napa, that they had been saving to enjoy with their kids at the holidays.

Four ... and a HALF

I cannot believe how my little baby Gabriela got to be four and a HALF. But yesterday was her half birthday. I thought it would be fun to point it out to her and make a big deal out of it.

So we have been counting down and on her actual half birthday, Gabriela and I went on a special date to see a theater performance of Peter Pan. It was super cute.  Gabriela was really excited by the fact that all the actors were kids and that they had moms and dads just like her.

We were planning to have a special half birthday dinner that night, but ended up having dinner at Uncle Nate's house.  So tonight we had the requested dinner: strawberry lemonade and pesto. We also had salmon and green salad, which were not requested, but are also some of her favorites. It was a good thing our dinner was postponed by one night because Grandma and Grandpa were driving through on their way home to Gilroy and they were able to join us. We lit some candles and sang Happy (half) Birthday, which she excitedly blew out and then announced that it was time for dessert.

It was super fun to celebrate and I hope we remember to do it every year! And now, a little more about my four-and-a-half year old.

She is always going through phases - first it was the blocks, and then the baby dolls and changing their diapers and giving them timeouts, then she was super into letter writing, and mostly these days it is pretend play and arts and crafts.

Gabriela spends just as much time, if not more, talking about what she is going to pretend, who will say what and then what will be said in response, as the actual pretend play itself. Right now we have a pet hippo named Marina, a cat named Riska, two dogs: Hoover and Alabama (who used to be called Libby), a duck named Daffodil, a ladybug named Rainbow Sparkle. I am sure I am forgetting some too.

These days my dining table and floor are nearly always covered in scraps, markers, scissors, paper, and glue. Gabriela constructs three dimensional houses for her little paper dolls that she draws and cuts out. The other day she made one completely on her own. The dolls had a house with a door that opened, a couch they could sit on, their big screen tv, a remote control, a stove (complete with burners and dials), and some pots and pans to go on the stove.

I have a giant stack of notes she has written me completely independently. They sometimes come with little envelopes she also constructs.  They all say the same thing, "Dear Mom, I love you. Gabriela"  How sweet is that?

Gabriela writes all her letters and can sound out written words. She can spell words if we help her break down the sounds individually.

She is a pro at bike riding and ringing her bike bell if anyone at all is on the sidewalk in front of her, and she is starting to get better at hula hooping.  She is also working hard on the monkey bars.

We have been reading up a storm lately. Since Christmas, in addition to the regular picture books, we have read one chapter book about Tiptoes Lightly (so cute!), Stuart Little, most of the first Magic Treehouse book, Ramona and Her Father, and we are half way through Ramona and her Mother.

Gabriela never ceases to amaze me with insights she has or questions she asks. The other day she asked me who the first person born in the world was. Her guess was George Washington.  Then she said it must have been a really long time ago, because those people lived, then died, and more people were born and died, and more and more and more until us.

Gabriela is usually a super sweet big sister. I just caught her and Easton walking hand in hand at farmer's market and I could feel my heart melting. It was so precious.

My baby girl is thrilled to be half way done being four.  I am having a bit of a hard time with it and may or may not have gotten teary eyed at some of the kindergarten orientations we have attended recently.

14 months old

Okay, so I got a little behind schedule this last month.

Easton is now 14 months old.  He has just a few new signs this month including where, tree, hot, and night-night.

I told him that all I wanted for Christmas was for him to say Mama, and he finally does. At first I didn't believe he was actually talking about me, but now I know he is, and it's the sweetest thing ever!
Here he is, putting an ornament on the tree. He had so much fun taking them off and trying really hard to put the ornaments back on the tree.

Every day, I am more and more thankful that he can use his signs to communicate with us. The other evening, much earlier than I usually put him to bed, Easton started doing the night-night sign and pointing to the bed. I nursed him in the bed and the little guy went right to sleep until the next day.

That's right, we haven't given up on the nursing yet. I used to nurse Easton all the time. The doctor said I should try to keep it to regular times (morning, night, and before rest times) because she thinks that his frequent nursing might be causing him to not feel hungry.  They are a little worried about how skinny he is, but Lane and I are his parents, so this is to be expected.

Easton is getting to be very vocal about when something happens that he doesn't like. I used to know from his certain cry that Gabriela was doing something he didn't like (like picking him up) and that was dangerous for him. Now that cry basically means, "give me what you have and hand it over now!"

Easton loves music and markers, but I don't let him hold onto markers very much these days since he learned how to take the tops off of them. One of his favorite things to do lately is the dishes.  He will cry and fuss and try as hard as he can to get his step stool in front of the sink.  In effort to help him enjoy his dishes and me to actually be productive, I lay a towel down on the kitchen floor next to me and give Easton a nice sized bowl with some suds and a few extra dishes. He will happily play like that long enough for me to make a nice dent in the dish washing.  Easton also loves to help cook.  Any time we are near the stove he does his "hot" sign and says "Hot!!" This doesn't stop him from begging to have a turn with the wooden spoon with the pots and pans on said hot stove. I love that he has so much fun in the kitchen with me.

Easton is really enjoying one of his new Christmas presents - a kid sized dust broom and dust pan!  About once a day (one of the many times) while I am sweeping the floor, Easton will rush into the other room and come back excitedly carrying his cleaning tools and try to help me. He usually just makes a bigger mess, but he is so thrilled to help me.

Pt Reyes Christmas Fun

Some dear friends of ours that we met in Washington DC were spending Christmas at a beach house in Marshall, CA this year. Now, don't be surprised if you haven't heard of Marshall. We hadn't either. I mean, the population is 50 people. But it's a gorgeous little town. The house was surrounded by the ocean, and actually on stilts so that the ocean was underneath it at high tide.
This photo is kind of blurry, but you can see how close we were to the ocean. It was so gorgeous, peaceful, and serene ... well, as much as it can be with a 4, 2, and 1 year old.
There were lots of photos taken over those two days we spent together, just not by me.  Here's Laura holding Easton.  We ate delicious food together, exchanged gifts, baked Christmas cookies, strung popcorn for the tree, took an adventure off to Drakes Beach in the rain, played games, drank wine, and just enjoyed each other's company. You know you have good friends when it doesn't even feel like you've been apart.  One of the sweetest things was seeing our kids play so sweetly together.

Can't wait for the next Ikeda/Grover reunion.

And I don't know if this link will work if you aren't friends with John on Facebook, but he took many more photos than I did of our fun time together.

Gilroy Gardens

Lane's parents had been wanting to see the Christmas lights at Gilroy Gardens, and since we have season passes, we jumped on board with the idea, picked a weekend that worked for both our schedules, packed up, came down for the weekend, and it rained like crazy, especially while we were at Gilroy Gardens.  We made the most of our trip and had lots of fun, despite the rain.

Some of the rides weren't operating because of the weather, others were going, but they were soaking wet. Gabriela really wanted to go on this hot air balloon ride, so we went for it in good spirits!
We saw a little colored lights show, rode the train a couple times, and we enjoyed hot cocoa and popcorn. But Gabriela's favorite was seeing the REAL Santa at Gilroy Gardens. I think this means she was really impressed with his beard.
She rode this carousel several times in a row and then we called it a night. It was really special for Gabriela to have some extra time with Grandma and Grandpa at Christmas time.
