Cooking with our nieces

Claire learned about packing brown sugar and how much tastier nuts are when you toast them on Saturday morning when she made a mixed berry coffee cake for breakfast (with a little help from Auntie Elena).

The girls created their own pizzas one night. They had fun shaping the dough and, of course, eating their masterpieces.
Uncle Lane taught Natalie all about his special recipe for oatmeal chocolate chip cookies - the infamous recipe that once resulted in two people getting into a fist fight at work and getting fired(seriously).

One of my favorite moments was at breakfast on Sunday, where after eating chocolate chip pancakes Uncle Lane made and some breakfast potatoes and asparagus and smoothies Claire exclaimed, "Awww, man!! I don't want to be full!!!"

The girls are really good eaters - they are gobbling up all of Auntie Elena's concoctions. Of course, we've been doing much more than eating. More on the rest of our adventures later!

Momma Tips from Claire & Natalie (ages 7 and 4)

As we were eating dinner tonight with Claire and Natalie, Natalie pointed out that I was a momma, and I would *definitely* be a momma when the baby comes out. So I took this opportunity to ask two little girls for good tips on how to be a good mommy. Here's what they told me.

* Put them in time out if they be bad
* Let them watch TV when they want (Claire says when you say they can) and Natalie added but not if it's too late
* Say "just a second" if you have to change
* Take them to nice places if they're good
* If your daughter is scared at the movies or on a ride, you can maybe hold onto her
* If they want lunch, give them lunch
* When she's a baby, rock her.
* Take them to school
* If they touch the fire, give them a paper towel with an ice pack
* If they're sneaking out the door, close it.

I'm so glad I wrote these down so I could share them on the blog!!

Help my nephew's elementary school!

Hey guys, this is the easiest fundraiser ever. My nephew, Chaney goes to Joaquin Miller school in Oakland, CA. If you visit the school's website, http://joaquinmiller.org/ and click on the "in association with Amazon.com" link, it will take you straight to amazon.com where 4 to 10% of any purchase you make will automatically go to his school. It only works if you click on the link, so please check it out.

Well, I'm off to buy some books for myself and support Chaney's school all at once. I hope you take some time to do the same!!

They're here!!!

Lane and I joined ZipCar this week so we could pick up our guests for this week, whom we've been been so eagerly awaiting. Zipcar was a snap! The registration was approved immediately, Lane picked up the ZipCard the next day. When we saw Ian & Adie's flight was arriving early, we were able to adjust our reservation without any problems. I'm looking forward to also using Zipcar for transporting CraigsList baby purchases over the next several months too!

But really, I'm not here to blog about Zipcar. Ian, Adrienne, Claire & Natalie are *finally* here! It's so wonderful to see them. They arrived at our house just as I finished making dinner. The girls were quiet and shy at first, but within 30 minutes they were bouncing around and giggling. We can't believe how big they are! And sweet as ever.

I cooked up some Mexican fiesta madness, along with my newfound dessert delight - buñuelos. Everyone gobbled down their whole dinner and we just chit-chatted and the girls talked to and read stories to my belly.

Today it was hard to leave for work with a houseful of family I wanted to hang out with. I left them warm banana crunch muffins so they could start their day off right. I can't wait to hear how their DC exploring goes!!

I'm sure we'll have tons of pictures to post soon!!

ATTN DC METRO RESIDENTS: There is something in the water!

There are two ladies at work that are also due the same week as me.

There are two other guys at Lane's work that are expecting babies.

Lane's supervisor just announced that she's having a baby and is due in September.

Our 12th floor neighbors just found out they are also having a baby!!!

Holy Babies!! I don't know if we are just more aware of these things now that we are pregnant, or if there's some strange phenomenon going on here! In either case, we're really excited for everyone!

More Portrait Gallery Pics

A Daddy Picture!!

Lane has been grossly under-represented in this Baby Blog. He cooperated with me when I asked him to take a picture with this super cutsie duckie towel that Malia gave us for Baby Grover.

Thanks, Malia! We can't wait to bundle Baby Grover up in this adorable towel!

Week 24

Baby Grover weighs just under 1.5 pounds, and she's supposed to gain more than six ounces just this week! Also this week, her nostrils will begin to open and blood vessels will develop in her teeny lungs. Baby Grover's little feet are just under 2 inches long right now.
I'm just starting to feel the extra weight I've been carrying around (all 18 lbs of it!). I think I'm starting to move a little slower than normal and my lower back is starting to bothering me a little. Lane is a sweetheart and has been rubbing my back for me like a good husband :)
I wonder what the heck I'll look like when the baby is 7 or 8 pounds, if I'm this big when she's not even 2! Watch out for my tummy, Washington DC!

Fun Times

Our weekend started off with a little trip down to Jaleo. We love to catch the Colombian brothers play their flamenco tunes there on Friday nights. This time it was only one of the brothers with a percussion guy. He came up to us afterwards to congratulate us on Baby Grover and we found out he and his wife are having a baby in June. He also gave us their new CD as a gift and told us to play it for the baby. So sweet. And kind of funny because a girl had *just* finished paying for her CD. We have somehow charmed them into giving us both of their CDs for free

We lazed around on Saturday and had a delicious breakfast of sautéed spinach, mushrooms, garlic, and grape tomatoes with eggs and toast. Lane made his signature smoothies. After this tasty breakfast, we ventured off on a multi hour tour of the area’s grocery stores in preparation for our visitors arriving later this week.

Sunday was delightful because we got to see Malia!! After more than TWO years, her moving to Hawaii and us to the East Coast, we have finally gotten back together. She and her friend Sarah came over for a brunch. We made them banana coconut muffins with berries, garlic and rosemary roasted potatoes, prosciutto wrapped roasted asparagus (Lane’s idea!), fresh strawberries, and of course, Lane’s super smoothies.

After feasting, we decided to head over to the National Portrait Gallery where we saw the presidential portraits, some interesting contemporary art, and our most noteworthy sighting – Stephen Colbert’s portrait. It is placed right above the drinking fountains and in between the men’s and women’s restrooms. It’s only there until April 1st, so it’s a good thing we went!

Before departing the city, we stopped at Matchbox in Gallery Place for some delicious pizza dinners and decadent desserts. I am excited to go back and try their mini burgers.

Malia will be back in just two weeks, since she’s on a work assignment in Baltimore for the next 4 months. We are looking forward to many opportunities to visit with her over that time.

First picture of Lane and me together with my noticeably pregnant belly, and what do I do? Cover it up with a sweater! What was I thinking?!?

Showing some Love

At 5:45 this morning, Lane kissed me goodbye as he headed off to work. Then he told the baby he loved her and kissed my belly. Immediately after that, she gave a little kick – her first of the day. Coincidence? Perhaps. Precious? Definitely!

Week 23

It seems like I was just 17 weeks pregnant, and now there are only 17 weeks left to go. This week, Baby Grover is just over 11 inches long and her unique little hand and footprints are forming.

After recently signing up for prenatal yoga classes, I’ve also signed Lane and myself up for a Baby Care Basics class and an Infant and Child CPR class.

In other Baby Grover news, we decided that once we choose a name for our little girl, we will keep it a surprise until she's born. But at the rate of progress we are making, we probably won’t know her name until after she’s born either!

I have been getting numerous suggestions at work, some just silly and others for real. So I decided to make a Baby Grover Name Suggestion Box. It is right by our goodies table at work, so people are regularly submitting their entries. I have also received suggestions from family members. My mom suggested Maria Elena (her name) and reminded me that she named her daughter after her mom. David thinks I should get ahead of the curve and name our daughter Davida, before everyone else catches onto the name. And my brother, Timothy Alexander suggested the name Alexandria.
I must now look super pregnant, without a doubt. Because as I stepped onto the metro yesterday THREE people simultaneously offered me their seats on the metro. I felt a little guilty because really, I'm not feeling the weight, I'm not tired, and I feel completely okay standing up or walking places. My once pregnant sister gave me two words of advice. MILK IT. Not sure if I'll follow that. Maybe later on when I'm super hot, out of breath, and wondering when the heck our baby will be born already. I'm just not quite there yet.

Another Quiet Weekend.

We had a nice evening bowling with our neighbor friends, Sean & Jess and Alex & Matt and Dave. While some of us were bowling strike after strike, others (ME) were bowling gutter ball after gutter ball. I could try blaming it on the whole pregnancy/different center of balance, but who would I be kidding?? I was a sucky bowler WAY before I was ever preggo. It was still great times that included a speed bowling game (until there were 3 balls in the gutter, granny style bowling, and all kinds of other fancy freestyle throws.

Saturday was a beautiful day. Lane and I went for a walk through parts of our neighborhood we'd never seen. It was so weird that just a few blocks away the city looks more like a little town with cute houses and yards instead of concrete high rise apartments and hotels. We really enjoyed the weather and seeing all the trees and flowers in bloom. I seriously could tell a difference in the cherry trees outside our apartment between Saturday and Sunday.

Lane and I went on a date on Saturday night to Thai food. We tried a different Thai place across the street. We give them an A plus on their Pad Thai, but their green curry wasn't as delicous as at other thai places nearby. We usually don't eat out much, but we figured we might as well go on some dates now, before the baby gets here.

Sunday we lazed around. I read and took naps while Lane played computer games. We did a little grocery shopping, watched a movie, and I got all homemaker on him. I made some greek salads for us to take for lunch today. Then I decided we should have some pita chips to go with them, so I sliced up some pitas, drizzled them with olive oil, greek seasonings and some salt and popped them in the oven. I also decided to get a head start on tonight's dinner, a broccoli cheese casserole. And then I thought I should just cook my own mushroom sauce, so I did.

Easy Delicious Breakfast

Lane and I have rediscovered the wonder that is oatmeal. Okay, I admit it. It doesn't sound terribly exciting. But it can be! I cook dried fruit up with the oats - usually cranberries and chopped apricots. This gives them a chance to get all nice and plump. After your oats are cooked (like 5 minutes), serve it up in bowls. You can add in cinnamon, fresh ground nutmeg, some fresh fruit (like a diced peach or banana), and my favorite addition that I learned from my sister, Cynthia: a heaping tablespoon of peanut butter. Some chopped nuts on top never hurt anyone either. It's so delicious AND flavorful without any butter or sugar. Although, Lane likes to drizzle his with honey.

A couple times a week, I'll bring a ziploc bag to work with my measured out oats, dried fruit, cinnamon and nutmeg, dump it in a mug with water and cook it in the microwave for 2 minutes. mmmm.

My metro ride home today

This evening I hopped on the metro, and this wonderfully sweet lady got up from her seat so I could sit down. I protested a little, but either she was very insistent, or didn't understand my protests.

She started up a conversation with me, and I realized she was just learning English. About half way through our conversation, this lovely Ethiopian woman told me that she was also pregnant (2 months)!! Of course, then I felt extra bad that she'd given up her seat for me. She was the sweetest lady, very kind, and anxious to practice her English. We talked about her job, her family back in Ethiopia, how she got married last year, and about her wedding.

She told me she'd see me next time, and I wished her good luck with her first baby. If it weren't for my big ol' belly, I never would have had the pleasure of speaking with this woman.

Perfect Pesto

So, it’s six days after our Mexican fiesta, and yes, we STILL have leftovers. That didn’t stop me from cooking dinner last night. Sure, I didn’t have to, but I was ready to eat something other than Mexican food, and to be quite honest, I missed cooking dinner for three plus nights in a row.

I used some gorgeous and fragrant fresh basil, garlic, and toasted pine nuts to make a pesto sauce. I sautéed some diced portabello mushrooms in olive oil and set them aside. I also cut some zucchini strips and tossed them in the water with my whole wheat pasta at the very end.

After mixing in some hot pasta water with the pesto sauce, I added the pasta, the mushrooms, the squash, a huge mound of fresh spinach, and extra grated parmesan sauce.

It was pure deliciousness.

But tonight, I’m making a little extra rice and we’re having carnitas burritos (again). Mmmm.

Seasons Change

Yesterday morning as I walked to the metro (above ground!), wearing a light sweater, with my sunglasses on, feeling the sunshine, and listening to the birds chirping, I couldn’t help but get a little giddy about the arrival of springtime.

Of course, it’s still a little chilly, but the cherry trees are starting to bloom. Little bits of pink and white fluff are sprinkling the bare trees, daffodils are everywhere, and you can still see daffodil stalks peeking out of the earth.

Yesterday I just sat on a bench outside, enjoying being there, and not being cold, no harsh wind freezing my ears or nose. I soaked in the sunshine and talked to my mom on the phone before I headed home. I felt so energized and happy.

It’s just going to get warmer, the trees are going to get prettier, everything is going to get greener and I will be delighted.

Exercise???? Huh??

So yeah, I've been totally slacking in the exercise department. According to everything I read, pregnant ladies are supposed to exercise for 30 minutes each day. I've never been one for the whole exercise/working out thing. And when I read about those 30 minutes I should be exercising every day, I can't help but wonder if walking to the metro counts?? (pretty please???)

In the fall I completed a whole series of twelve 1.5 hr yoga classes. They were totally awesome. But I didn't sign up for the next level of classes because I thought I wouldn't be able to fully participate in all the poses. Of course, last week some of my friends who also go to the same yoga studio said they have pregnant ladies in their classes all the time!! I wish I'd talked to them sooner.

I even bought prenatal yoga videos to do at home, but who was I kidding??? I've done the workout like three times.

Anyway, the good news after all this is that I just found out that George Washington Hospital has prenatal yoga classes! I signed up for the April classes, and if I enjoy it as much as I think I will, I'm going to sign up for May and June. It couldn't be any more convenient. The hospital is RIGHT next to the metro stop I get off at to go to work - it's no extra metro or walking, and exactly what I've been looking for. I only wish I'd discovered it sooner.

Wish me luck, as I try to venture into the world of exercise.

Busy Weeks Ahead

In only TWO weeks Ian, Adrienne, Claire & Natalie will be here. We promise to take lots of pictures documenting our adventures through DC and the cherry blossoms! I can't wait to visit with them, catch up, and go out on field trips throughout the city as well.

Our good friend from college, Malia, is in Baltimore for the next 4 months. Boy, is that a lot closer than Hawaii! We are excited for the opportunities we'll have to visit over the next several months, starting with the weekend of April 5, when she'll be in town. Yay!! I don't think we've seen Malia since she got married and moved back to Hawaii almost three YEARS ago. We have some serious catchup to do, having missed our annual game-a-thons for the past two years.

After that weekend, Lane is heading to LAS VEGAS for a weekend with his brothers. I know he's really looking forward to the trip. They're going to catch a Cirque de Soleil show among other Las Vegas-esque activities. That same weekend, one of our good friends from high school is coming to visit. Lane's a little disappointed he'll miss out on seeing Morgan, but I'm looking forward to the girl time.

The next month is just going to fly right by us!!

Week 22

Baby Grover's eyes have developed, but her irises don't have any pigment yet. She looks like a miniature newborn right now. Her skin is really wrinkly, but that will change as she gains weight. Right now Baby Grover is about 1 pound. Over the next four weeks she is supposed to weigh twice that amount!

She's moving around all the time now, and my belly button is half way popped out. Here's an interesting tidbit I was surprised to learn: blood flows through the umbilical cord at a rate of four miles an hour!!

Brief Baby Update

One of my new found pastimes is staring at my belly. Lane has joined in the fun, and we can regularly see my stomach pop up on one one side and twitch in another. It's fascinating to think that there's a little person in there making all those movements, and more so that she's our daughter!!!

Adrienne told us our niece, Claire stayed up late the other night brainstorming names for her first girl cousin. How precious is that?!?! She's coming in a couple weeks, so I'm hoping to get my hands on that list.

Fiesta Mexicana

For a really long time, I’ve been telling Lane we should have a Mexican Fiesta - invite our friends and cook a ton of food. But I was all talk and no action. Finally I came through and we went all out fiesta-ing it up on Saturday.

We had carnitas and all the fixings, Lane made killer pico de gallo, I made an enchilada casserole – which is basically lazy person’s enchiladas. You assemble it like a lasagna – layers of tortilla, sauce, cheese, and filling. I also made my favorite Mexican comfort food – carne con chile, which is basically sautéed pork with a tomato chile sauce. I made a huge pot of rice and beans and we were good to eat all night long.

A couple hours before we got started, we realized we had no dessert to serve. I quickly remembered a little dessert my nana used to make: buñuelos – you basically fry up some flour tortillas until they get golden and puffy, sprinkle them with cinnamon sugar and serve while still nice and warm. I’d never made them before, and my mom never did either. They were a great success! Biting into that flaky sweet tortilla goodness transported me to being a little girl, enjoying a special treat from my nana. I can’t believe I never thought of making those sooner.

We had a great time with bunches of our friends. I absolutely love to entertain, get our friends together for loads of laughs and endless delicious eats. I wish we did it more often. I also wish we had taken some photos; I even charged the camera battery, but forgot to bring out the camera once people started arriving.

While the party ended Saturday night, the Mexican fiesta did not stop there. I went a little overboard on the food (as usual). It’s like I have this outrageous fear that we will somehow have a room full of starving people and suddenly run out of food. Maybe it’s the Mexican in me. I seriously could have invited everyone over again the next night and fed them all a second time without cooking anything extra.

This did not stop me from making another of my favorite Mexican comfort dishes – posole. I used the extra enchilada sauce we made, along with the carnitas broth. You just add hominy, some of the carnitas meat, and some extra seasonings and then you have a delicious soup. The best part is adding goodies on the top – fresh chopped onion, cilantro, and avocado along with some lemon juice makes it just perfect.

I also indulged in a little extra Mexican goodness that I learned from my mom. A corn tortilla with chopped avocado and a little salt makes a fabulous taco. I introduced Lane to it yesterday. He kind of laughed at me for how excited I got about it, but he loved it too. Feeling overconfident by my success, I announced to Lane that we would try making tamales (without my mom!!) sometime before the baby is born. I wonder if he'll hold me to it.

We finished off our weekend with a clean apartment – even after having almost a dozen people over!! And we watched a cool documentary – the US vs. John Lennon. It’s the really interesting story of how the US was against John Lennon and tracking him because of his opposition to the Vietnam War. The film is full of footage of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, it has tons of his songs in it throughout, and really gives a much better idea of who John Lennon was outside of the Beatles.

Needless to say, I probably won’t be cooking most of the week.

Movin' and a Groovin'

Today I actually SAW my tummy bounce around when Baby Grover kicked. Wow, she sure is getting strong!

Perfect Timing!

We are so excited that Ian and Adrienne's visit to DC is quickly approaching. We can't wait to visit with them, see our lovely nieces, and show them Washington DC. We were even hoping their visit would coincide with the beautiful cherry blossoms. There are literally thousands of cherry trees all throughout the city, and they are just gorgeous when in full bloom.

Adrienne couldn't have planned the dates of her family's vacation any better. Just yesterday she forwarded me an official Cherry Blossom Festival email saying this:

It's Predicted!2008 Press Conference Capped with Peak Bloom Announcement

Rob DeFeo, Chief Horticulturist for the National Park Service, announces his prediction for the peak bloom dates of the Yoshino cherry trees around the Tidal Basin to be March 27 through April 3, 2008.
(the exact dates of their trip!!)

And so the madness begins

About six weeks ago, I promised myself I wouldn't buy any (more) baby clothes until after we found out the gender of our baby. I was so proud of myself for not buying a single article of clothing that whole time. We'll see how much I can hold back now that we know we're having a baby girl. So far, I haven't been doing so hot. The morning after finding out Baby Grover is a little girl, I made an order online for dresses and cutsie girly clothes. But give me some credit, they were all on super sale. And who could pass up these darling outfits at Costco??? I never knew they had such cute (and affordable) baby clothes. Watch out, Costco. I'll be back!

More Baby Grover Pics

Here is her little foot. She decided to say hello to her Mommy & Daddy. Her mouth is open in this one.
Here you can see her little nose, nostrils, and her mouth...along with her arm and tummy.

Week 21

Baby Grover has been drinking the amniotic fluid for hydration and nutrition, and even urinates in the fluid. Good thing it is replaced completely every three hours! It’s no wonder I am supposed to drink so many fluids. While her eyes have not yet opened, they are very active. Baby Grover has also started to develop some fat, which helps to keep her nice and cozy warm. Ever since Lane felt her moving for the first time last Wednesday, we’ve noticed her become more active (and stronger) every day!

Yesterday we also had our regular prenatal appointment. At the ultrasound appointment, the doctor said the distance between the placenta and cervix should be 2 cm. When they measured mine, it was 1.8 or so. My obstetrician said that is fairly typical at this stage, and that we’ll do another ultrasound later on to monitor the location of the placenta. She said that it will usually move further away. However, if it doesn’t, a C-Section may be necessary because the placenta could detach early in labor causing too much bleeding. The doctor seemed fairly confident that this is normal, and there isn’t much to worry about. We’ll just wait and see how the next ultrasound looks.

Our spinal bifida screening came out fine, and the doctor gave us a list of pediatricians so we could pick one.

Low Key Weekend

Lane and I started out our weekend at the Arlington Cinema & Draft House. It’s a cool little theatre where they serve food and have a bar, so you can eat and drink while catching a movie. Lane’s work rented out the place, fed us, gave us lots of drinks, and hired two comedians for the evening. We had a really good time, and we’d been talking about checking this place out ourselves anyway. The movies generally come out a little later than at the normal theatres, but the price is $5.50, so it’s worth the wait if you ask me! We are hoping to catch a showing of Sweeney Todd there soon. We ate good food, and got to see some of Lane’s co-workers and their spouses that I hadn’t seen in a while. After the show, the party relocated to a sports bar, but we decided to go home and skip out on the smoky atmosphere.

The rest of the weekend we cleaned like nobody’s business! We rearranged furniture, reorganized stuff, I conducted an analysis of what documents we really need to save (and ended up shredding about 8 paper bags of paper recycling in the process). When I told my brother what we were up to, he commented on my “nesting” so early – nesting? I hadn’t even thought of that. I just figured it would be good to get a head start on cleaning since we are having a party next weekend and also are having the Santa Barbara Grovers come stay with us later this month. Although, I have to admit, I couldn’t help but admire all the newly created open space and think how it would be better for the baby.

The down side of all this cleaning and dusting and paper shredding is that I had a serious allergy attack. I couldn’t stop sneezing for HOURS. And, I was afraid to take any medication to stop my symptoms. Of course after seeing the doctor today, I now know that it would have been okay to take anything.

After two days of cleaning, I decided we deserved a little treat, so I made two pizzas – one with goat cheese, roasted bell peppers, grape tomatoes and fresh rosemary, and the other with spicy sausage, feta, and pepperoncinis. We watched the movie Bobby, about the night Bobby Kennedy was killed. We really enjoyed it and thought it was cleverly done.

Baby Grover is ....

a Girl!!!

Today we had our big ultrasound. Everything looked just right - all the organs are developing correctly , and we got to see our baby GIRL moving all around. She is one active child! The technician first told us Baby Grover was lying in the breech position. Before we knew it, she had moved so that her head was on the right side, and then all around to the left side. I think she was trying to give us the grand tour of her living quarters. The technician measured the nose, leg bones, and circumference of the head to determine the gestational age, which they decided was 21 weeks exactly. Tomorrow I'm supposed to be 21 weeks, so it's right on schedule. We could see her moving around, crossing and uncrossing her legs, opening and closing her mouth, it was so precious! Baby Grover weighs about 14 ounces, and Lane says she already has a Grover chin.

We are so excited!! And so are our families! Our niece, Claire called to be the first in her family to find out. When we told her and her sister Natalie they were going to have a girl cousin, Natalie exclaimed, "We never had one of *those* before!!". Too cute.
We can't wait to meet our baby girl.
